Happy Republic Day India!!! - 2012

theFundooGeek! wishing from USA :

India celebrates her Republic Day every January 26th to commemorate the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950.
Traditionally, since 1950 every year leaders from different countries are chosen and invited as the State Guest of Honor at the Republic Day Parade in Delhi. This year the honor goes to the first woman Prime Minister of Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra.

Annually, the Republic Day in India is celebrated with much passion in the entire country and also by Indians abroad. As part of the federal celebrations, an impressive parade is held in New Delhi from Raisina Hill next to Rashtrapati Bhavan (the President’s House), beside the Rajpath, before India entrance and on to the notable Red Fort. The parade starts with the India’s President laying a headdress at the Indian Gate at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, honoring all the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

A twenty one gun salute is tendered, the National Anthem is played and the President unfurls the National Flag. This indicates the opening of the parade. The President of India, who is also the Indian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief, takes the salutation at the impressive parade.

On Republic Day, martyrs and heroes who showed courage and bravery for country's sake without bothering their own lives are also remembered and conferred prestigious and significant awards including Kirti Chakra and Ashok Chakra are conferred on the event by the President.

Strap on Your Seat Belts - Safety Tips for Road Trips

We all love road trips, especially if the route is scenic. The most important part of planning a road trip, so the trip is enjoyable, is safety first!

So, in order to help make your next road trip pleasant and fun, here are some safety tips. These tips are not just for long road trips but for every time that you get in a vehicle to travel by road.

Tips for planning your next road trip:

  • Plan your trip. First, you need to start your road trip planning by determining where you're going to go. This does not take long, but you need to know the route and points of interest and halts/rest areas along the way. Even if you have a GPS, it may not be a bad idea to carry a real printed map. Also check the weather and road conditions on the internet before you start. Be prepared!
  • Make your hotel reservations before you start. Part of the fun when traveling on the road is stopping wherever your heart desires, but there's nothing worse than a "No Vacancy" experience.
  • Give your vehicle a full tune up before you go or consider renting a car. Making sure your automobile is in tip top working order is more important than anything else. A break-down is the worst thing that can happen on a road trip. Ask your mechanic to ensure the car fluids are topped, air pressure in your tires is as recommended by the manufacturer and any other necessary concerns regarding your vehicle are addressed. Make sure you pack a roadside safety kit just in case of an emergency.
  • Along with a safety kit, make sure to pack pair or working flash lights (torch) with extra batteries, emergency quota of food and water, sanitary stuff, emergency radio and emergency roadside flares.
  • Don't forget to pack a boredom buster bag for the kids. If you are travelling with kids, you need to make sure you have plenty to entertain them during the road trip. This can include paper, pencils, crayons, doodle board, magnetic board games, Rubik cube etc. If your vehicle has a DVD player, make sure to pack some extra DVDs that everyone will enjoy.

  • Make sure you start early in the day to avoid rush hour. This can save you much time on the road especially in crowded metropolitan cities.

Other useful tips for when you are driving:

  • Pay attention! if you feel yourself getting tired, pull over at a safe location and take a break. If you are travelling with another licensed driver, it may be a good time to let them drive while you rest.
  • Make a habit to scan the roads for any situations that could be harmful.
  • Use your vehicle's mirrors often to check other vehicles behind and around you.
  • Always look as far down the road as possible. This will help you anticipate slow-downs, stops, crashes or other emergencies that affect traffic and can lessen the chances of an accident. Don't be caught with tunnel vision. This is easy to develop if you're travelling down a long stretch of highway with minimal activity to keep you alert. Make it a point to frequently scan the road and along the shoulders will help reduce the tunnel vision occurring.
  • Open the windows to let fresh air in once in a while.
  • If you are unfortunately involved in a propertydamagee collision, in an area where you are unfamiliar with the neighborhood or in a potentially unsafe location, stay in your vehicle. Use a cell phone to contact law enforcement/emergency personnel. If you don't have a cell phone (something isdefinitelyy wrong here!) motion the other driver to follow you to a safe location where there are other people and sufficient light and then exchange information.
  • If a driver attempts to force you off the road, do not stop! Slow to a safe speed and then drive to a safe location. If possible get the license plate number and a description of the other vehicle and its occupants.
Devote your full time and attention to driving. If each person does their part to being a safe driver, perhaps the number of accidents and fatalities can begin to go down.
Drive safe! Save a life!!

So, what are you waiting for? Start packing and have a pleasant trip!!! Have a safe & enjoyable journey!

Swami Vivekananda's 1893 Chicago speech - Full Text

On Swami Vivekananda's 149th birth anniversary, here's the full text of his famous Chicago speech through which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions, Chicago in 1893.

11th September, 1893

Sisters and Brothers of America:

{At this moment came the three minute standing ovation from the audience of around 7,000}

It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. l thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions; and I thank you in the name of the millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects. My thanks, also, to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honor of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration.I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to the southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings:

As the different streams having there sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to thee.

The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world, of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita:

Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me.

Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization, and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

Swami Vivekananda’s standing ovation: Swami Vivekananda's opening talk is a benchmark, in that he was one of the earliest teachers to come to America from the East, and the first swami to visit America. Most notably, this was his first talk in America. After the welcome address of the opening of the World Parliament of religions, Swami Vivekananda spoke, and started with these few words: “Sisters and Brothers of America” The approximate 7,000 people in the audience, immediately feeling the depth of his sincerity, rose to their feet and according to reports, “went into inexplicable rapture with standing ovation and clapping that lasted for more than three minutes”.

2012 Resolution - Go Green

Source: WorldWatch Institute:

As we begin 2012, many of us are wondering what we can do this year to live a little bit better. Some make resolutions and make serious effort to achieve those goals. Others make resolutions just out of habit since it is the new year! :)
Anyhow, if you are one of the folks who likes to put resolutions to action, then here is one for you - Go Green!

Not a difficult resolution to keep if you have the environment in mind and a firm resolve to help the planet and the next generations.

“The global community, and particularly people living in industrialized societies, have put unsustainable demands on our planet’s limited resources,” says Robert Engelman, president of the Worldwatch Institute, a global environmental research organization based on Washington, D.C. “If we expect to be able to feed, shelter and provide even basic living conditions to our growing population in years to come, we must act now to change.”

The United Nations has designated 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. Broadening access to sustainable energy is essential to solving many of the world’s challenges, including food production, security and poverty. “With so many hungry and poor in the world, addressing these issues is critical,” says Danielle Nierenberg, director of Worldwatch’s Nourishing the Planet project. “Fortunately, the solutions to these problems can come from simple innovations and practices.”

The Nourishing the Planet team recently traveled to 25 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and will be soon traveling to Latin America, to research and highlight such solutions. The project shines a spotlight on innovations in agriculture that can help alleviate hunger and poverty while also protecting the environment. These innovations are elaborated in Worldwatch’s flagship annual report, State of the World 2011: Innovations that Nourish the Planet.

Here's a twelve point plan to put into action in 2012, courtesy of The Worldwatch Institute:

  1. Recycle
  2. Turn off the lights
  3. Make the switch
  4. Turn on the tap
  5. Turn down the heat
  6. Support food recovery programs
  7. Buy local
  8. Get out and ride
  9. Share a car
  10. Plant a garden
  11. Compost
  12. Reduce your meat consumption
Read the complete article on the Worldwatch Institute blog.

Let's resolve to make 2012 a healthier, happier and greener year for all. Have a great year ahead!

The 7 Habits of Spectacularly Unsuccessful Executives

Source: Forbes:

If you exhibit several of these traits, now is the time to stamp them out from your repertoire. If your boss or several senior executives at your company exhibit several of these traits, now is the time to start looking for a new job.

Here are the seven habits, as Sydney Finkelstein described in a 2004 article:

  1. They see themselves and their companies as dominating their environment
  2. They identify so completely with the company that there is no clear boundary between their personal interests and their corporation’s interests
  3. They think they have all the answers
  4. They ruthlessly eliminate anyone who isn’t completely behind them
  5. They are consummate spokespersons, obsessed with the company image
  6. They underestimate obstacles
  7. They stubbornly rely on what worked for them in the past
