Happy 66th Independence Day India!! - 2012

theFundooGeek! wishing from USA :

Happy Independence Day - 2012, India!!!

The Independence Day of India is celebrated on August 15th to commemorate its independence from British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation on that day in 1947. On the stroke of midnight, a country came into life again as the British handed over the governance of India to the Indian leaders. The British government declared the country independent and left for their own shores.

It was on this historic date that Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime Minister of India, unfurled the Indian tricolor on the ramparts the magnificent Red Fort, symbolically marking the end of the British colonial rule. This has become tradition where each and every Indian Prime Minister hoists the Indian Tricolor flag on the Red Fort on 15th August every year and delivers a nationally televised speech from its ramparts.

To our Indian patrons, best wishes on India's Independence Day from all of us @ FundooGeek.com

Mumbai Chowpatty Flash Mob - India's Biggest Flash Mob for a Social Cause by Students

Source: an enthusiastic FundooGeek fan:

Mumbai hosted another Flash Mob last weekend. However, this one was different ... it was for a social cause.

The students of Wilson College decided to raise their voices against this appalling trend of blatant violation of a woman's right to equality and to stop female infanticide on the 28th of July at Girgaum, Chowpatty beach in Mumbai (Bombay). The campaign is aptly named "Dance for a Life" and has a online presence on Facebook. An individual's voice may not echo but with over 4000 youngsters chanting a similar moral, the echoes will ring through the by-lanes of Mumbai. Hence making this the biggest Flash mob India has ever seen.

The flash mob was planned, organized and coordinated by third-year BMS (Bachelor of Management Studies) students from Wilson College as part of their college festival, Adoria. They intended to create awareness about the issue of female infanticide. The flash mob received participants from about ten colleges and four schools from across Mumbai. Their dance was named ‘Dance for a Life’.

“We intended to spread the message across to a large number of people,” says Aviral Avasthi, student of BMS and coordinator of the flash mob.

There was an unfortunate twist to the story though -
As soon as the students arrived at the beach the police present there refused to let them carry their stereo system inside. “Any function or program at the beach requires prior permission from the High court. Chowpatty beach is open for selective functions like the Ganesh festival and Janmashtami,” said Ajit Surve, Senior Police Inspector.

After a discussion with the Wilson faculty, the police allowed the students to carry on with their dance but did not allow them to play music. Thus the students had to perform to the rhythm of claps. “We tried to get the permission from the High court but were unsuccessful. So we decided to perform anyway,” said Professor Dr Zuleika Homavazir, Head of the BMS department. The flash mob lasted four minutes and ten seconds.

Actress Nagma made a special appearance too. The donations collected will be donated to Bal Bhavan, an NGO in Andheri.
