Bhuvan – A Newbie Challenger to Google Earth

Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth have a new challenger to content with - Bhuvan. The new entrant is a Geoportal of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) showcasing Indian Imaging Capabilities in Multi-sensor, Multi-platform and Multi-temporal domain.

Bhuvan ISRO launched Bhuvan on 12th August as a beta version of its web-based 3-D satellite imagery tool. Well, it seems its a fashion to release and hold products in beta (Google is well known for this practice).

Bhuvan is a free web based image portal that provides medium to high resolution satellite imagery of virtually the entire India over the internet. Needless to say, the imagery would steer clear of all sensitive military installations in India for security concerns. Space officials requesting anonymity said viewers can zoom into ‘Bhuvan’ maps up to 10 metres compared to Google Earth’s 200 metres and Wikemapia’s 50 metres. The satellite images are expected to be upgraded every year compared to Google Earth's every 4 years.

Unlike Google Earth, the Bhuvan application will not be downloadable.
