Roger Federer – Wimbledon Champion

Like a true Champion Roger Fereder won the 2009 Wimbledon in style. By doing so he proved to the world that he is the greatest player (men) of all time. Applause I know not everyone will agree with the above assessment but … My favorites have been Jimmy Conners, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Boris Becker on the men’s side. In women’s tennis my all time favorite is the one and only Steffi Graf. Love Struck

So, back to Sunday nights’ match on Centre Court. It wasn’t an easy match, in fact it was one of the most fiercely contested final I’ve ever watched. What an epic climax to a grand tournament. The final scoreline, which read 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 16-14 after 257 minutes of play, had class written all over. Andy Roddick was at the receiving end this time and to imagine he was sooo close to laying his hands on the trophy. Aagh! I’m sure Andy Roddick will have nightmares about this loss. He will especially want to forget the final 3 minutes of the second set tiebreak. Those 3 minutes and 4 points that Federer won showed his genius. If Roddick would have converted one of those 4 set points, the result could have been different. But it was not to be. This was Federer’s night and he would not let anyone or anything take it away from him. I think it boiled down to who could keep his nerves and surely Federer proved again why he is better than anyone at playing under pressure. In the end Roddick succumbed but not until he had Federer sweating and panting through 5 sets with 2 going to the tie breaker and 30 games played in the final set.

History made: By winning the 2009 Wimbledon Federer made history. He won the 15th Grand Slam title of his career, he regained the number one world ranking and became the greatest player to lift a tennis racket. He surpassed Pete Sampras’s record of 14 Grand Slam titles. A record that when Sampras set in 2002, winning the US Open final, no one believed it could be bettered. A record the world thought would stand for ages. Hardly so! It took Federer just 6 years to better that record.

Sampras was there to witness history being made. So were legends Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg. And of course, yours truly saw it unfold on TV.  Three cheers for the Champ Federer!!!  Not worthy
