Tata Motors Delivers On Promise Of World’s Cheapest Car - Nano

Tata Motors delivered the first Tata Nano in Mumbai, India today. Ratan Tata, the Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Motors, handed the keys to the first owner of the world's cheapest car. Mr. Ashok Raghunath Vichare of Mumbai received his choice, the Tata Nano LX (Lunar Silver), at the company’s dealership, Concorde Motors.

"I'm happy to be the first customer. This is a common man's car.", said customs official Ashok Raghunath Vichare, new owner of a $2,025 four-door car with a 624 cubic centimeters rear-mounted engine. Along with Mr Vichare, two other customers, Ashish Balakrishnan (Tata Nano LX – Sunshine Yellow) and Kores India (Tata Nano LX – Lunar Silver), also received their cars today. The base model of the world's cheapest car costs Rs.100,000 (1 lakh Indian rupees or US$2,025 or UK£1,200).

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Tata said, “I hope the Tata Nano will bring motoring pleasure to those who will be buying their first car as also those who currently own cars but want a modern, contemporary, emission-friendly city car.” According to Tata the Nano will be the least polluting car in India.

About 200,000 people have orders for the car with Tata Motors, which used a ballot process to select the first half of those for initial deliveries, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported from Mumbai on Friday. Analysts say that if the car proves an immediate hit in its home market, Tata may struggle to meet demand. This is because the primary Nano factory in the western state of Gujarat, with capacity to produce 25,000 cars a year, is not due to open until 2010.

Analysts say the delivery of the first car to the customer was "very significant" considering the fact that the launch had been delayed.

Tata Motors also owns the iconic Jaguar and Land Rower brand of vehicles.
